Promote Good Habits with Pediatric Dentistry

It is important to teach your child the value of good oral hygiene habits early on as it will put them on the right track for a lifetime of healthy habits. Some ways you can do this for your child include:

  • Ensuring that your child brushes their teeth by establishing a morning/evening routine
  • Instilling the habit of daily flossing to prevent cavities and decay
  • Being a positive role model for your child by brushing and flossing regularly yourself
  • Limiting sugary snacks and starches as these can lead to bacteria growth and tooth decay
  • Scheduling regular visits with a pediatric dentist in order to prevent cavities and tooth decay

If you are located in Bloomfield, Canandaigua, Fairport, Farmington, Macedon, Pittsford,

Why You Should Bring Your Child to a Pediatric Dentist

  • Trained to Treat Growing & Developing Teeth: A pediatric dentist is trained, educated, and experienced in treating and maintaining children's teeth. Pediatric dentists have the knowledge and skills to handle any issues that threaten the dental health of infants, children and teens. Furthermore, pediatric dentists are qualified to provide sedation to young children undergoing intense dental procedures or treatments.

  • Comprehensive Care: With the dental care experience our pediatric dentists have, you can rest assured you and your loved ones will receive the utmost care.

  • Prevention of Oral Issues: Taking a child to the dentist early is the first step towards keeping tooth decay away. The pediatric dentist will evaluate the child looking for signs of decay, and they can do preventative treatments like cleanings and applying dental sealants. Pediatric dentists also teach your child about healthy oral habits such as brushing, flossing, and mouthwash and how to do all of these.

FAQs

Should I help my children brush their teeth?

Yes, definitely. Use a soft toothbrush that is small enough to fit their mouth. When they are an infant, daily brushing will suffice, but help them brush twice daily once most of their baby teeth have come in.

When should I make an appointment with the dentist for my child?

Schedule their initial appointment at about age 3 so we can check for any potential issues.

Why do baby teeth matter? Don’t they just fall out anyway?

Baby teeth serve the same functions as adult teeth do, which include speaking and eating. They also serve as placeholders for the adult teeth, so if they fall out before they’re supposed to, the remaining teeth can shift, and a space maintainer will need to be placed.

How does sucking a thumb or pacifier affect teeth?

They both affect them equally, but a pacifier is much easier to wean a child off of. We prefer to see these habits stopped by age 4 due not only to the outward movement of the teeth but also malformation of the jaw. We recommend a conversation with Dr. Wendy and her staff at your child’s visit where they will come up with a plan.

What if my child requires sedation for their appointment?

Many children do better than you think, but if your child does require sedation, rest assured, Dr. Wendy knows many pediatric offices who will take superior care of your child. Usually, once the work is completed, your son or daughter will rotate right back into their normal dental cleaning schedule with you and the rest of your family.

What if I just don’t know when to bring my child in or how they will do?

That’s an easy one! Please bring your child in with you when you come for your appointment. We will give them “a ride in the chair,” a toothbrush, and will also let them grab a prize on the way out! It’s a great opportunity to get them familiar with the office and have a stress-free visit.
