Restorative Dentistry

You may need restorative dentistry treatment if you suffer from tooth decay, fractured teeth, and old restorations needing replacement. If you have a cavity that goes untreated, it will simply get bigger and cause more pain. Once this happens, the treatment options will become more extensive and expensive. Worst case scenario: the tooth will have to be removed and replaced with an artificial tooth.
The Formation of Cavities
Cavities are small holes that form on the surface, side, or root of a tooth. If you combine too many sugars with the bacteria in your mouth, a mild acid is formed and begins to eat away at the enamel of the hard outer layer of the teeth.

No matter what age you are, you’re at risk without proper oral health. Babies can get cavities on their front teeth if they are given a bottle to sleep with, as milk contains sugar. Children can get cavities on the chewing surfaces or in between teeth. Adults are most at risk for new and recurring cavities. Cavities can occur if your tooth isn’t covered with enough enamel and are too soft, or without proper brushing and flossing.
Restoration Choices for Cavities
As part of any visit to Finger Lakes Dental Care of Victor, we check any restorations, such as crowns, fillings, bridges, veneers, etc. for any sign of decay or old age. As needed, we recommend X-rays so that we can see inside and between your teeth. If we spot any cavities, we will recommend different options for restoring the tooth to full function. If the cavity is in the very early stages, a home fluoride rinse may do the trick to help the tooth fight the cavity and possibly prevent the need for restorative treatment.
