ROOT CANALS

Root Canals
for Patients in Victor, Canandaigua, NY & the Surrounding Areas

Root canals are necessary when the pulp, or the soft tissue inside the root canal, becomes infected or inflamed. A tooth can become infected when bacteria penetrate its interior. The tooth’s pulp, which is comprised of nerves and blood vessels, begins to die, leading to a lot of pain and eventually an abscess. Symptoms include sensitivity to hot and/or cold foods and drinks, toothaches, pain while chewing, darkening of the enamel, and swollen gums.

When a root canal is performed, the pulp and nerve are removed from the tooth, and the inside area is filled after it is carefully disinfected. After the tooth is filled, it is sealed to prevent internal infection. Dr. Wendy and the staff at Marshall Dental Care of Victor can perform a root canal procedure to remove the decaying pulp while saving the tooth’s enamel and structure. You can have a tooth that’s pain-free and fully functional again.

We complete root canals for patients in Bloomfield, Canandaigua, Fairport, Farmington, Macedon, Pittsford, Victor, NY, and the surrounding communities. If are dealing with pain, we encourage you to contact our office today to learn more about the root canal process and schedule an appointment!

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

  • extreme toothache pain when chewing or when pressure is applied
  • prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, even after the heat or cold has been removed
  • discoloration of the tooth in pain
  • swelling and tenderness in nearby gums
  • a persistent or recurring pimple-like bump on the gums

The Procedure

Root canals may take 1-3 office visits, depending on the situation. We numb the area, so you won’t feel pain during the root canal. After the tooth is numb, a drill is used to access the root canals and pulp chamber. These are then cleaned out and then an antibacterial and antiseptic solution is used to clean and disinfect the canals.

After drying, the canals created to remove the pulp are closed. The canals are filled with a rubber-like material which is then heated and compressed so it fits perfectly against the walls of the canals. Adhesive cement is also added to further seal the canals and to keep bacteria out.

A permanent crown will eventually be placed over the filling to protect the tooth over the long term, but there is usually a waiting period between dental appointments while the crown is being fabricated to match your existing teeth.

Dr. Wendy and the staff will provide you with everything you need to know to for post-op to reduce pain and swelling. The restored tooth can last a lifetime when properly cared for.
