Immediate Tips for Dealing with Dental Emergencies:

A dental emergency can strike at any time; that is why our oral surgeon and family dentist are here to help. Here are some tips for dealing with a dental emergency before you get to our office.

Cracked or Broken Teeth

Immediately rinse out your mouth with warm water. Rinse multiple times if necessary. For swelling, hold a cold compress against the affected area.

Severe Pain

Rinse your mouth out to clear out any food and bacteria. Try flossing to remove any food particles that could be stuck between your teeth. If necessary, take an oral pain reliever to dull the pain.

Knocked-Out Tooth (Adults)

It’s important to keep the tooth moist. You can do this by holding it between your cheek and gums or placing it in a small glass of milk. If you must touch the tooth, hold it by the crown and don’t touch the root. For swelling, hold a cold compress against the affected area.

If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, we welcome you to contact our team of dentists for immediate care! Preventing Dental Emergencies

Sometimes accidents happen and cause dental trauma or emergency situations. It can be difficult to plan for those times; however, it is possible to take some precautions to help lessen your chances of sustaining dental injuries.

  • Best Practices: Use general common sense to keep yourself safe as you go through your daily life. Always wear a seatbelt and place children in appropriate car seats when driving; many people don't consider the risk of dental injury during a car accident. In addition, wear the proper protective equipment when participating in sports or high-impact recreational activities. A well-fitting mouth guard can make all the difference when skating, participating in martial arts, biking, or playing sports.

  • Childproofing: Babies, toddlers, and small children are at as much risk for dental injury as adults. Make sure that you properly childproof your house to minimize the risk of falls or other injuries. Correct any safety hazards to minimize the risk of accidents. During the winter months, make sure that all outdoor paved areas on your property are properly plowed and salted to minimize the risk of slips and falls. We all know how difficult winter weather can be in the Victor, NY area!

  • Dental Care: Schedule regular dental visits for everyone in your family, no matter their age, and make sure that you properly brush and floss between visits. Take prompt action if you discover irregularities or cavities to keep your teeth and gums strong. If you grind your teeth at night, consider a mouth guard to protect your teeth and jaw from wearing down.

  • Eating Mindfully: The way you consume your food can make a difference in the state of your teeth. When you eat, avoid using your teeth as tools to rip, tear, or cut foods; use the proper utensils instead and use your teeth to chew. Avoid chewing on items or hard foods that can crack your teeth, such as popcorn kernels, hard candies, ice, and more.

Taking the proper precautions during your daily routine can help keep you safe in the event of a traumatic event. If you do sustain a dental injury, however, it's important to take quick action. Our family dentist, orthodontist, and oral surgeon is always on hand to help you deal with dental issues, no matter how urgent. We will help minimize your pain and devise a recovery plan to help correct the issue. Whether you need a cosmetic procedure, a crown, or other dental service, trust our office to get the job done so you can go back to smiling with confidence.
